  • 3 battery models are documented as running it: LiTime 12V 100Ah TM, LiTime 36V 50Ah TM, LiTime 12V 50Ah TM, from the manufacturer's own documentation, 2 of them needing more than one pack in series.
  • 9 battery models are matched as running it across 5 brands, by setting each maker's published figures against the other — neither names the pairing, 8 of them needing more than one pack in series.
  • Minn Kota recommend lithium.
  • 9 batteries are explicitly documented as NOT suitable for it.
  • Published as 36 volts · 52 A at most, and only in bursts · 112 lb of thrust.
  • 15 specifications are published for it, each with the source it was read from, 2 of them corroborated by a second source.

That is a peak, not a continuous rating. The maker publishes no continuous draw for this — see below for what they say about it — so a pack sized on the figure above is sized for the worst moment rather than for the load it will hold.

Whether it can run on lithium
Yes, but not above 85% speed for long — see the manual

Minn Kota trolling motors can run on Lithium-Ion batteries. However, they are specifically designed to run on traditional lead-acid batteries (flooded, AGM or GEL). Lithium-Ion batteries maintain higher voltages for longer periods of time than lead acid. Therefore, running a Minn Kota trolling motor at speeds higher than 85% for a prolonged period could cause permanent damage to the motor.

Amp-hours the maker names for lead acid
105 Ah, for lead acid and “for best results” — not a floor

The motor will operate with any lead acid, deep cycle marine 12-volt battery/batteries. For best results, use a deep cycle, marine battery with at least a 105 amp-hour rating.

Batteries documented to run this

Some rows below are marked FIGURES COMPARED. On those the figures line up and neither manufacturer states that the pack runs the device — that is our reading of what each of them published separately, not a claim by either of them or a test by us. Even where every stated figure agrees, these can still decide it:

  • A motor’s published draw is usually a peak, not the load it holds — the two numbers are not the same kind of quantity
  • A maker’s amp-hour minimum and their reserve-capacity minimum can give different answers about the same battery
  • Conditions attached to the chemistry, such as a speed limit for running on lithium
  • Whether the pack may be wired in series at all, where the device needs 24 or 36 volts
  • The charger, which both makers put conditions on and neither supplies
  • Case size, hold-down and terminal type — fitting the space is not being secured in it

Worth confirming with the manufacturer or a dealer before buying.

  • Three of these, Three 12-volt batteries wired in series.

Only on a comparison of two published figures — Epoch's 300 amp-hours against the 105 that Minn Kota's manual asks for, and with three of these wired in series as their manual requires

Minn Kota's manual for this motor asks for at least a 105 amp-hour rating. Epoch rate this pack at 300 amp-hours each, which clears that and their website guide's 110 as well. Epoch also publish a recommended continuous discharge of 150 A against a 300 A maximum, and the motor's 52 A peak draw is well inside the recommendation. What the capacities do not settle is what each maker says this kind of battery is for. Epoch sell it as a "Dual-purpose cranking and deep-cycle LiFePO4 battery" and print 1,000 A at five seconds beside the 300 Ah. Minn Kota say a cranking battery "is not suitable for use with an electric trolling motor because they focus on quick, strong burst of power to start your outboard engine vs long-lasting power for trolling motor use". Their objection is to a battery built only for cranking and Epoch's claim is that this one is built for both — but Minn Kota have not said a dual-purpose pack answers it, and Epoch have not addressed Minn Kota. Both sentences are here because neither company has resolved the other. Minn Kota attach a condition to lithium that no comparison of capacities can settle either: this motor is "specifically designed to run on traditional lead-acid batteries", and running it above 85% "for a prolonged period could cause permanent damage to the motor". This motor takes three 12-volt batteries wired in series; Epoch permit up to four of these in series, so three is inside their limit. Minn Kota forbid mixing types in such a string: "Do not connect a Lead-Acid and Lithium in a series to create a 24-volt system". Neither company has named the other and nobody has tested the pairing.

Minn Kota's manual for this motor asks for at least a 105 amp-hour rating and says the motor will run on any lead-acid, deep-cycle marine 12-volt battery. Trojan rate the 27TMX at 105 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate each, meeting that figure exactly. Minn Kota do not say which discharge rate their figure applies to, and Trojan publish four figures for this battery: 85 at the 5-hour rate, 97 at 10, 105 at 20 and 117 at 100. The 20-hour rate is the conventional marine rating and the one compared. Minn Kota's website battery guide asks for 110 amp-hours rather than the manual's 105, and they have not reconciled the two; at 105 this battery meets the manual's figure and falls short of the guide's. Trojan give reserve minutes at two currents for this battery — 175 minutes at 25 amps and 45 at 75 — and the 52 amps Minn Kota state as this motor's maximum draw falls between them. Trojan publish no figure at that current, so how long it would last there is not something either company states. Minn Kota's manual for this motor is explicit that three 12-volt batteries wired in series are required. Their amp-hour figure is asked of the battery rather than of the string, so it is compared against a single one. Their battery-guidance table recommends lithium at 125 to 150 amp-hours for a 112 lb motor, which is a different chemistry from this one — the manual and the table are both Minn Kota's and they do not agree. Only on a comparison of two published figures — Trojan's 115 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate against the 105 that Minn Kota's manual asks for, and with three of these wired in series as their manual requires

Minn Kota's manual for this motor asks for at least a 105 amp-hour rating and says the motor will run on any lead-acid, deep-cycle marine 12-volt battery. Trojan rate the 27TMH at 115 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate each, 10 amp-hours above it. Minn Kota do not say which discharge rate their figure applies to, and Trojan publish four figures for this battery: 95 at the 5-hour rate, 106 at 10, 115 at 20 and 128 at 100. The 20-hour rate is the conventional marine rating and the one compared. Minn Kota's website battery guide asks for 110 amp-hours rather than the manual's 105, and they have not reconciled the two; at 115 this battery clears both. Trojan give reserve minutes at two currents for this battery — 200 minutes at 25 amps and 51 at 75 — and the 52 amps Minn Kota state as this motor's maximum draw falls between them. Neither company has named the other and nobody has tested the pairing.

  • Lithium Pros S2460

on what each maker publishes about the other's kind of product — Lithium Pros sell this one for outboards and rate it in cranking amps, and Minn Kota rule cranking batteries out for trolling motors

Lithium Pros sell the S2460 as "the world's first sodium-ion battery made for outboards" and rate it at 800 MCA Eq — marine cranking amps. Minn Kota rule that out directly: a cranking battery "is not suitable for use with an electric trolling motor because they focus on quick, strong burst of power to start your outboard engine vs long-lasting power for trolling motor use". Lithium Pros publish no amp-hour figure for it anywhere, so Minn Kota's 105 amp-hour requirement cannot be tested, and the alternative they give for that case — at least 180 minutes of reserve capacity — is not met either: the 108 minutes on the page is below it, and is scoped to a 50% throttle setting rather than being the BCI measure Minn Kota mean. Both routes fail, and the makers' own descriptions of what the product is for point the same way. This motor takes three 12-volt batteries wired in series, and Minn Kota forbid mixing types in such a string: "Do not connect a Lead-Acid and Lithium in a series to create a 24-volt system". Neither company has named the other.

  • Lithium Pros TM133

on a comparison of two published figures — Lithium Pros' 33 amp-hours against the 105 that Minn Kota's manual asks for, and with three of these wired in series as their manual requires

Minn Kota's manual for this motor asks for at least a 105 amp-hour rating. Lithium Pros rate the TM133 at 33 amp-hours each, 72 amp-hours short of it. Minn Kota's website battery guide asks for 110 amp-hours rather than the manual's 105, and they have not reconciled the two; at 33 this pack falls short of both. Lithium Pros publish a reserve-minute figure for this pack and it names Minn Kota, which is not a statement that the two go together: their footnote assumes a 50% throttle setting on a Minn Kota motor and a 50% duty cycle, so it is a runtime estimate for one motor at one throttle position. It is not the BCI reserve capacity — minutes at a fixed 25 amps — which is the measure Minn Kota's own requirement refers to, so the two numbers should not be set against each other. Minn Kota attach a condition to the chemistry that no comparison of capacities can settle: this motor is "specifically designed to run on traditional lead-acid batteries", and "running a Minn Kota trolling motor at speeds higher than 85% for a prolonged period could cause permanent damage to the motor". On charging they are the other way about — motors and Precision chargers made in 2021 or later carry a lithium profile, and earlier Precision chargers can charge lithium on the AGM setting. Minn Kota's manual for this motor is explicit that three 12-volt batteries wired in series are required, and their amp-hour figure is asked of the battery rather than of the string. They also forbid mixing types in such a string: "Do not connect a Lead-Acid and Lithium in a series to create a 24-volt system", which rules out part-upgrading an existing lead-acid set. Their battery-guidance table recommends lithium at 125 to 150 amp-hours for a 112 lb motor. Neither company has named the other and nobody has tested the pairing.
