Devices documented to run on this

The figures below line up. Neither manufacturer states that this pack runs this device — that is our reading of what each of them published separately, not a claim by either of them or a test by us. Even where every stated figure agrees, these can still decide it:

  • The device’s published draw is usually a peak, not the load it holds — the two numbers are not the same kind of quantity
  • A maker’s amp-hour minimum and their reserve-capacity minimum can give different answers about the same battery
  • Conditions attached to the chemistry, such as a speed limit for running on lithium
  • Whether the pack may be wired in series at all, where the device needs 24 or 36 volts
  • The charger, which both makers put conditions on and neither supplies
  • Case size, hold-down and terminal type — fitting the space is not being secured in it

Worth confirming with the device's manufacturer or a dealer before buying.

Minn Kota's manual for this motor asks for at least a 105 amp-hour rating and says the motor will run on any lead-acid, deep-cycle marine 12-volt battery.

Minn Kota do not say which discharge rate their figure applies to, and Trojan publish four figures for this battery: 85 at the 5-hour rate, 97 at 10, 105 at 20 and 117 at 100.

The 20-hour rate is the conventional marine rating and the one compared.

Minn Kota's website battery guide asks for 110 amp-hours rather than the manual's 105, and they have not reconciled the two; at 105 this battery meets the manual's figure and falls short of the guide's.

Trojan publish no figure at that current, so how long it would last there is not something either company states.

Neither company has named the other and nobody has tested the pairing.

Trojan rate the 27TMX at 105 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate each, meeting that figure exactly.

Their amp-hour figure is asked of the battery rather than of the string, so it is compared against a single one.

  • One of these.

Only on a comparison of two published figures — Trojan's 105 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate against the 105 that Minn Kota's manual asks for — check yours before buying.

Trojan rate the 27TMX at 105 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate, meeting that figure exactly. Trojan give reserve minutes at two currents for this battery — 175 minutes at 25 amps and 45 at 75 — and the 50 amps Minn Kota state as this motor's maximum draw falls between them. Minn Kota's battery-guidance table recommends AGM or lithium at 100 amp-hours for a 55 lb motor, alongside the manual sentence quoted above.

  • Two of these, Two 12-volt batteries wired in series.

Only on a comparison of two published figures — Trojan's 105 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate against the 105 that Minn Kota's manual asks for, and with two of these wired in series as their manual requires — check yours before buying.

Trojan give reserve minutes at two currents for this battery — 175 minutes at 25 amps and 45 at 75 — and the 56 amps Minn Kota state as this motor's maximum draw falls between them. Minn Kota's manual for this motor is explicit that two 12-volt batteries wired in series are required. Their battery-guidance table recommends lithium at 100 to 125 amp-hours for an 80 lb motor, which is a different chemistry from this one — the manual and the table are both Minn Kota's and they do not agree.

  • Three of these, Three 12-volt batteries wired in series.

Only on a comparison of two published figures — Trojan's 105 amp-hours at the 20-hour rate against the 105 that Minn Kota's manual asks for, and with three of these wired in series as their manual requires — check yours before buying.

Trojan give reserve minutes at two currents for this battery — 175 minutes at 25 amps and 45 at 75 — and the 52 amps Minn Kota state as this motor's maximum draw falls between them. Minn Kota's manual for this motor is explicit that three 12-volt batteries wired in series are required. Their battery-guidance table recommends lithium at 125 to 150 amp-hours for a 112 lb motor, which is a different chemistry from this one — the manual and the table are both Minn Kota's and they do not agree.

Do not charge with

The manufacturer states these chargers must not be used with this battery:

  • Progressive Dynamics state it outright about this converter: "The 4500LI series converter/chargers are designed to recharge lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries only. DO NOT USE TO RECHARGE LEAD/ACID BATTERIES!" This pack is Flooded lead-acid, which is a lead-acid chemistry, so their sentence covers it. They say nothing about packs of other chemistries and nothing here extends it past what it covers.
