What this standard covers, in our words
The marine instrument network standard, described by its publisher as “a low-cost moderate capacity bi-directional, multi-transmitter/multi-receiver instrument network to interconnect marine electronic devices”. It governs INTEROPERABILITY and says nothing about the safety of the device that connects: a certified product is one that speaks the protocol correctly. NMEA state that “all products that read and or transmit NMEA 2000 information must be certified by NMEA”, and NMEA itself issues that certification. Version 3.000 with amendments.
