What this standard covers, in our words

The North American safety standard for lithium CELLS. It covers primary and secondary lithium cells used as power sources in products, and evaluates them against abuse — short circuit, overcharge, crush, impact, heating — to reduce the risk of fire and explosion. Its subject is the cell and not the pack, and not the finished product the pack goes into: a pack assembled from UL 1642 cells is not itself certified to anything by that fact.
