This recall covers only some units of this product, identified by specific serial or identification numbers, specific model numbers and the dates it was sold. Check the recall notice against your own unit before concluding whether it is affected.
Units covered: This recall involves certain lots of the RELiON InSight Series® 48V lithium-ion batteries with, model number 48V030-GC2 and serial number ranges between RB48300020210314057- RB48300020210314729, RB48300020210330001- RB48300020210330715, and RB48300020210507012-RB48300020221016550. The serial number of the recalled product can be found on the label located on the side of the battery. The intended use includes, but is not limited to, golf carts, low-speed vehicles, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and outdoor utility terrain vehicles (UTVs).
Hazard: The batteries can overheat, posing thermal burn and fire hazards.
Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled RELiON InSight Series® 48V batteries and contact RELiON Battery for a free repair. RELiON will provide a shipping container for the free return of the recalled batteries. A repaired battery with equivalent remaining cycle life will be shipped back immediately. RELiON will also extend the warranty on replaced batteries for an additional six months beyond the original warranty period.

The serial number of the recalled product can be found on the side of the battery. Country of Origin: China. Product Description: "The intended use includes, but is not limited to, golf carts, low-speed vehicles, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and outdoor utility terrain vehicles (UTVs). The batteries can be utilised as stand-alone units or connected in an approved parallel architecture to increase capacity." Risk level: Serious. Measure type: Recall of the product from end users.
Hazard: The product presents a serious risk of fire as a manufacturing fault can lead to corrosion across the ribbon cable terminal where it mates with the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) for the Battery Management System. Stress on the product's capacitor can lead to the sealing mechanism becoming compromised, which can cause electrolytes to leak onto the PCB. If there is arcing across the sense ribbon terminal, the resistors can overheat, and the product can ignite. The product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
Remedy: The product has been recalled from end users by the manufacturer, RELiON.
Our note — not the regulator’s words
THE AMERICAN NOTICE FOR THE SAME DEFECT SAYS ONLY THAT THE BATTERIES CAN OVERHEAT. CPSC 23-140, published twelve days earlier on 2 March 2023, covers the same model number and the same three serial ranges and gives the hazard as "The batteries can overheat, posing thermal burn and fire hazards." The UK notice gives the chain of events instead. Both are held, and neither replaces the other.

Only on the 48 volt model, and on published figures — InSight Series 48V 30Ah GC2 Lithium Battery is rated 100 A continuous and Rhodan rate this motor at up to 50 A — check yours before buying.
Rhodan state this system runs on 24, 36 or 48 volts depending on the model, and that its "system current draw will vary with thrust level up to a maximum of 50 amps at 100% thrust". This pack is 51.2 V nominal — what the industry sells as 48 volts — and its maker rate it at 100 A continuous as a maximum, and 45 A as their recommendation — so the motor's 50 amps is comfortably inside what the pack can do and 5 A above what its maker suggests for continuous use. The two figures are different kinds of number: Rhodan's is a peak draw and the pack's is a continuous rating, so the comparison runs the cautious way round. Rhodan also ask for a 60 amp breaker. The gap between RELiON's two figures is more than double, so which one a reader is shown changes the answer: against the maximum the motor draws half, and against the recommendation it is over. Rhodan's own display shows "THRUSTER CURRENT DRAW (Amps)" while the boat is running, so this is a figure an owner can watch rather than a calculation. Neither company has named the other and nobody has tested the pairing.
